How many photos fit on A4, A3, or A3+?

The answer changes with exact print dimensions, rotation, printer margins, gutters, and the usable area of your printer. The table below is a verified starting point, not a substitute for your own settings.

At zero margin and zero gutter: the current optimizer finds 3 standard 4 x 6 inch prints on A4, 6 on A3, and 9 on A3+. These layouts allow rotation. Add your real printer margin and cutting gap before treating any count as production-ready.

Method: one sheet in stock, 12 identical requested prints, rotation enabled, zero margin, and zero horizontal and vertical gutter. The production optimizer returned valid non-overlapping layouts using its MaxRects pattern search. It labels these results “best found,” not mathematically proven global maxima.

Why a simple rows-by-columns calculation can be wrong

A basic calculation tests one orientation at a time. A nesting layout can combine portrait and landscape cells in the same sheet. That is why A4 can hold three 4 x 6 inch prints even though a single-orientation grid suggests only two.

The same effect appears with five 5 x 7 inch prints on A3+. The optimizer combines 177.8 x 127 mm landscape cells with 127 x 177.8 mm portrait cells. The arrangement fits within the 329 x 483 mm sheet and passes the optimizer's bounds and overlap checks.

Four settings that reduce the real count

  1. Printer margin. A 5 mm margin removes 10 mm from both the usable width and height.
  2. Cutting gutter. A gap between adjacent prints consumes space even when the sheet edge is borderless.
  3. Physical paper dimensions. A rounded 10 x 15 cm label may describe 100 x 150, 101 x 152, or 101.6 x 152.4 mm stock.
  4. Rotation rules. A portrait must sometimes rotate to fit; directional paper, text, or image orientation may prevent that.

Do not set margins to zero just to reach a target count. Use your printer's printable area and the clearance your cutting method needs.

Calculate a real print job

  1. Add every paper type. Enter its exact size, price per pack, sheet count, and available stock.
  2. Add the finished prints. Mixed sizes and quantities can share a job.
  3. Enter margins and gutters. Measure one output sheet if the printer specification is unclear.
  4. Choose cost or waste. Lowest cost compares pack prices; least waste compares unused physical area.
  5. Review every sheet. Print a PDF worksheet or export the layout to Lightroom Classic.

Common capacity questions

How many 4 x 6 photos fit on A4?

The optimizer finds three on a 210 x 297 mm A4 sheet with zero margins and gutters and rotation allowed. Your usable count may fall to two when printable margins or cutting gaps are added.

How many 10 x 15 cm photos fit on A3?

The optimizer finds six exact 100 x 150 mm prints on A3 under the same zero-clearance assumptions. Confirm whether your “10 x 15 cm” media is actually 100 x 150 mm or a rounded 4 x 6 inch format.

Does A3+ equal 13 x 19 inches?

Not exactly. This tool uses 329 x 483 mm for A3+ and 330.2 x 482.6 mm for exact 13 x 19 inch paper. Select the dimensions printed on your pack.
